Academic positions, appointments and contact information
I am a professor of political science, with a focus on international politics, at the Geschwister-Scholl-Institute of Political Science at the University of Munich (LMU). I consider myself quite fortunate to be co-editor of the Journal of European Public Policy, together with Jeremy Richardson who founded the journal in the early 1990s and has carried it from success to success. I don't like bibliometrics (obviously) and impact factor obsession (clearly), but this is a ranking I really like (and all the others that place JEPP where it belongs).
In my research I specialize in the politics of regional integration, the European Union in particular. I am also interested in institutional theory - logics of institutional choice and change -, the democratic implications of multi-tiered governance arrangements, questions about political representation (such as the representation of women in the European Parliament), as well as regulatory governance in the EU (exploring the exciting world of EU agencies and policy networks). You can find a list of my collected academic musings here.
Before coming to the LMU in 2011 and moving within walking distance to my favorite Upper-Bavarian mountain range, I have held positions at the University of Mannheim as professor in political science and contemporary history, where I could also gain administrative experience as Dean of the School of Social Sciences. Prior to joining the Mannheim crowd, the Kaiserslautern University of Technology employed me as a junior professor in comparative politics. I also gained teaching experience at the University of London (Birkbeck College) as a temporary lecturer, while I was a "PPRF" (Postdoctoral Prize Research Fellow) at Nuffield College (University of Oxford), where I also received my doctorate (D.Phil.) in 2003. I have a M.Sc. from the London School of Economics and Political Science in 'European Policy and Politics' (1999). Other than a "Vordiplom", I have not managed to obtain a proper German university degree and still feel bad about dropping out of the University of Konstanz (not that they would care). Please do also check out my chair's website where you will find ample information on my collaborators and more information about current teaching.
